Grammar: first steps › Lesson 4
Asking questions with か
Add か at the end of a sentence to turn it into a question.
Key points
か at the end
Turn "Gakusei desu" into "Gakusei desu ka" by placing か at the end. When speaking, your voice rises on the last sound.
Question words
When you use question words such as だれ (who), 何 (what), どこ (where), いつ (when) and いくら (how much), you still end with か.
Examples
Anata wa gakusei desu ka.Are you a student?
Eki wa doko desu ka.Where is the station?
Kore wa ikura desu ka.How much is this?
Ano hito wa dare desu ka.Who is that person?
Ocha o nomimasu ka.Will you drink tea?
You can answer with "Hai, sou desu" (yes, that is right) or "Iie, chigaimasu" (no, that is not right).
